A Chapel Hill Tradition Since 1945

Longtime friends Herbert Wentworth and Richmond Sloan first worked together managing a munitions plant at Carr Mill during the 1940s war effort. In 1945, the two men purchased a jewelry store located in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and soon relocated the newly renamed Wentworth & Sloan Jewelers to Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. With that move, a local legacy was born. Mr. Wentworth remained active in the jewelry business for several years before leaving daily operations to Mr. Sloan. He went on to become Secretary of the North Carolina Savings and Loan Association, a role that allowed him to pursue his true passion community growth and development. Deeply rooted in Chapel Hill, Mr. Wentworth served his neighbors and the town with dedication until his passing at the age of 100 in 2014.

In 1970, legendary stone cutter Hank Hurlbert introduced a young Kenneth Jackson to Mr. Sloan. The partnership was a natural fit. When Mr. Sloan retired in 1982, he sold the store to Mr. Jackson—though his “retirement” lasted just six months. Mr. Sloan soon returned to work alongside Mr. Jackson nearly every day until his death in 1998.

In 2002, Mr. Jackson moved Wentworth & Sloan Jewelers to University Mall, and in 2024, the store relocated to its forever home in Southern Village. To this day, you can still find Mr. Jackson in the shop, honoring a promise he once made to Mr. Sloan: to uphold the highest standards of quality, service, and professionalism in jewelry.
